The Oba of Benin Palace Walls

The palace walls were made from the Benin red soil or Ulakpa.Instead of using water to mix the mud(Earth)for setting the walls,Palm Oil(for cooking)was used. The walls are between two and four feet thick. One of the miracles that had made the walls of the palace of the Oba Of Benin-Eguae Oba N'Edo-wonder and baffle the modern Architecture is that despite age and the weather conditions they have had to go through,no part had cracked.

During a face-lift by Oba Akenzua the second,an un-influenced Benin traditional artist Chief Idah made seven relief sculptures to decorate seven of in-the-walls built four foot pillars.

The plaques in Benin red soil mixed with cement. They were made to immortalize Oba Ozolua (Ni Baromi Eko) the conqueror. He ruled Benin between 1481 and 1504 A.D.
