Edo SUBEB Host an Interactive Luncheon with High-Level Delegation from Rwanda

The Ancient city of Benin on Thursday,  February 21st, 2019 received the presence of a high-level delegation from Rwanda who were in the state for a two-day interactive session with Edo SUBEB officials, teachers and other administrative staff.

The visit afforded the delegates to learn about Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) as they went round some EdoBEST schools to have a first hand experience on how the program works and get information on the enormous progress made so far...

Responding to questions asked by the Rwanda delegates, EdoBEST teachers happily shared their experiences and laudable achievements since the inception of the program. They stated that the program has helped them become better teachers and caregivers as their reading skills have improved tremendously, it has enabled them teach easily without the stress of having to consult various texts, improved their pronunciation, sharpened them generally and the use of daily and weekly strive points have helped a great deal in their classroom management.

On the other hand, it also gave EdoBEST teachers the rare privilege to learn about Rwanda, the genocide, its effects and modalities that have been put in place to help traumatized pupils in schools. Responding to a question asked by an EdoBEST teacher from Olomuza primary school, Useh Teacher Omodamwen Ehizogie on whether History, as a subject is currently being taught in Rwandan schools considering the genocide and it's resultant effects on teachers and pupils, how teachers teach it without recreating division, and how traumatized kids are being handled, the Registrar General Rwanda Development Board, Louise Kanyonga and Deputy Director General of the Rwandan Education Board(REB), Angelique Tusime responded in affirmative that History is being taught as they have decided to face their weaknesses and learn from it by telling their children the truth, embarking on unity and reconciliation.
Also, intervening supports have been put in place to help teachers deal with traumatized pupils. Most importantly, they have adopted a slogan which they call: NEVER AGAIN! They have also redefined their values to DIGNITY and SELF RELIANCE. These, and some others, they have put in place and it has helped them a great deal.

The Deputy Director General of Rwandan Education Board, Angelique Tusime appreciated the fact that they got to meet different stakeholders and could spend quality time at some EdoBEST schools to really understand how the program works.

On her part, the Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Dr, Joan Osa Oviawe stated that it was a great opportunity having to share EdoBEST practices with the delegates from Rwanda.

Indeed, it was a beautiful event as it ended with a sumptuous buffet session.
