SUBEB Commences Training for SBMCs
The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) will on Wednesday the 21st of November 2018, commence a three-week long training exercise for 11,628 School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members from across the 18 Local Government Areas of the State.
Basically, the SBMCs are made up of members of communities hosting the 612 public primary schools currently within the Edo BEST framework. They bring reports and feedback of activities of host communities, the schools, and other relevant government bodies and stakeholders in the basic education sub-sector. This ensures adequate participation of communities in the effective administration of public primary schools in consonance with Edo BEST programme. They also promote such issues as the access rights of children to basic education as enshrined in the constitution.
Speaking on the efficacy of this community based initiative, the SUBEB boss, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe noted that "the key to the sustainability and success of Edo BEST is community engagement and ownership. As a result, the capacity of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) has been strengthened and enhanced for effective community participation and support to basic school improvement in quality teaching and learning."
She opined that SBMCs across the 612 Edo BEST schools have been dismantled and restructured with communities electing their own SBMC representatives. In total, across the 18 LGAs in Edo BEST schools, there are 11,628 community members who will undergo this three-week long training on how to effectively run their SBMC.
The ongoing transformation in basic education in the state is all encompassing. The idea is to establish a system that works and guarantee a bright future for the pupils by creating a 21st Century learning environment that would equip them with modern societal needs.
