Edo History Today....Queen Idia of Benin Kingdom

Image
Queen Idia was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a very significant role in the rise and reign of her son. She was a strong warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. When Oba Ozolua died, he left behind two powerful sons to dispute over who would become Oba. His son Esigie controlled Benin City while another son, Arhuaran, was based in the equally important city of Udo about twenty miles away. Idia mobilised an army around Esigie, which defeated Arhuaran, and Oba Esigie became the 16th king. Victory over Igala people Subsequently, the neighboring Igala peoples sent warriors across the Benue River to wrest control of Benin's northern territories. Esigie conquered the Igala, reestablishing the unity and military strength of the kingdom. His mother Idia received much of the credit for these victories as her political counsel, together with her magical powers and medici...

EDO FLAG (DEFINING D MEANING OF EVERY SYMBOL IN IT!)

Image
(1) QUEEN IDIA MASK: The mask obviously is the head of the Edo warrior queen-mother Idia, the mother of Oba Esigie known as the wise King. Recall that Oba Esigie ruled over the whole of Bendel, Lagos, half Yoruba lands, Onitsha and even some parts of today's north central. He was a great emperor and the first to receive a diplomatic mission from Europe and also the first black Ruler to set up an embassy in the land of the whiteman. He attained these feats with the help and encouragement of a mother who is now recorded by local and foreign history as one of the most dynamic and strongest women that ever came out of Africa. Why do you think her mask, not that of Queen Amina of Zazzau or any other historical Nigeria woman was adopted by the country in 1977 as the national symbol in that international festival of arts and culture? Even till date, the mask is still used by the country to project the viability of our culture, the virility and strength of the ni...

Teaching... Strengthening and Revitalising the Profession.

Image
Teachers are essential school-level determinants of children learning. They are the most important curriculum implementers. Without them, no education policy can survive and  they are expected to be very capable and highly productive. Teachers performance to a large extent affects not only the output (citizens) they produce, but also the educational system and teaching profession at large so kin interest must be paid to why teachers performance is low... Poor teacher performance apart from very low motivation teachers get in terms of their pityable renumeration, to a large extent boils down to the pre-service training amongst others... Like the saying goes, "you can't give what you don't have" . Some of these curriculum and training systems our pre teachers are expose to are rather obsolete. They don't correlate with our present day "jet age". Thank goodness EdoBest has come to the rescue of Edo basic education teachers in this aspect. We also h...

The Oba of Benin Palace Walls

Image
The palace walls were made from the Benin red soil or Ulakpa.Instead of using water to mix the mud(Earth)for setting the walls,Palm Oil(for cooking)was used. The walls are between two and four feet thick. One of the miracles that had made the walls of the palace of the Oba Of Benin-Eguae Oba N'Edo-wonder and baffle the modern Architecture is that despite age and the weather conditions they have had to go through,no part had cracked. During a face-lift by Oba Akenzua the second,an un-influenced Benin traditional artist Chief Idah made seven relief sculptures to decorate seven of in-the-walls built four foot pillars. The plaques in Benin red soil mixed with cement. They were made to immortalize Oba Ozolua (Ni Baromi Eko) the conqueror. He ruled Benin between 1481 and 1504 A.D. Eguae Oba N'Edo by Chief Priest Ebohon.

The only difference between You and your Landlord is foresight.  Bushes becomes houses. Aso rock was once a bush like wise white house. Everywhere humans now occupy was once a bush...it has been this way from the beginning of time. That you haven't owned a house today is probably because you want to buy or build in the city. Good dream i must say,but how long have you been dreaming and watch people finish their house?  While you're still dreaming, people like your landlords are busy buying bushes and transforming them into houses that people pay to live in. Remember, the place you now call home was a thick bush that your landlord had the foresight to buy and build. Better stop dulling yourself and take a clue from your landlord and put your #FORESIGHT to use by buying a land today.  become a wise tenant today. Make a move.
