Edo State Government and Edo SUBEB on Wednesday, 20th march, 2019 played host to Facebook Education Delegates. The meeting was an explorative avenue for a collaboration between Facebook International and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as a way of consolidating on the Edo BEST Initiative. Speaking at the event, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, emphasised his receptiveness towards the Facebook-SUBEB partnership. Obaseki opined that an effective system of education for pupils of the State is a preparation for a competitive future with their peers in other parts of the world. "A child in Ekpoma, a child in Ubiaja, a child in Auchi, in 10 or 20 years time should be able to compete with their peers in any part of the world. So we need to prepare them", the Governor noted. On Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 Edo SUBEB hosted a Stakeholders' Consultative Meeting on Pillar 3 of Edo BEST, which is Curriculum and Pupil Learning Outcomes.  This was to enable stakeholders discuss the new innovation of Teaching at the Right Level (TARL). TARL is about grouping pupils by ability level instead of grade level while focusing on four key areas: literacy, numeracy, writing and critical thinking. Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has signed the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Bill into law. While signing the bill into law in Government House, Benin city, Edo state, the Governor stated that the bill prohibits violence against all persons and provides maximum protection and effective remedy for victims and punishment for offenders and other related matters. This law which is aimed at helping vulnerable members of the public, sentences wife beaters to two years jail term when proven guilty, has rape properly defined in it and sentences rapists to life imprisonment. The Governor who stated that signing the bill was not a mere formality disclosed that he will ensure it is implemented to the letter because he was aware that the bill touches on fundamental practices among the people. Discrimination is the practice of treating one or more persons differently from how you treat others by being bias, unjust, less tolerant or less fair to them base on various reasons. Teachers are human beings and as such, embedded with bias and social predujices. While it is highly unlikely that a teacher would consciously act on these biases which eventually result in discrimination,it does happen.Teachers must watch out not to handle pupils base on their social class, ethnicity, intelligence, behavior, physical disabilities, religious backgrounds, etc The experiences children get in their classrooms to a large extent, determine what and how they see themselves generally.While we do not intend to discriminate, subtle differences in perception and handling them go a long way to have some long lasting effects...
